Advent, Day 25: The Last Post!

CHRISTMAS! is today. We got up early, at like 7:00, and opened presents. I got a bunch of supercool new stuff. We ate breakfast and got ready for church (I wore my green 1990's Christmas dress, black velvet heels, big curls and new red lipstick from Nikki. I was class-ay!) and then went early to church for our big musical number.

I like short church. Church should always be one hour long and mostly musical numbers.

Afterwards we went to Grandma's house, where Megan, Dad and I spent the whole time digging through big trunks of old pictures and magazines. I love that stuff; Megan brought a bunch of stuff home to paint and sketch.

I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas, I really do. It's the best time of year, this, so peaceful and centered. Life and stress starts again tomorrow. A new year starts in a week.

Get ready!

Advent, Day 24: Christmas Eve!!

Today is Christmas Eeeevvvee!!! Yay! We are celebrating by cleaning the house (yaaay) and making food. My sisters, Mom and I made a ham, twice-baked potatoes, asparagus, Christmas mousse, carrot pudding (which is actually cake. Not pudding. I think cuz it's probably English because they call everything pudding and who else would put carrots and potatoes in dessert. I ask you.) and a breakfast casserole for tomorrow morning (our day will have to start early to account for church not being for Christmas.. go figure.)

We are playing Barenaked For The Holidays and have essence of white fir in the oil-diffuser-thingy. Tonight we'll eat this giant meal, by candlelight, read the Nativity, sing carols (edit: we did, quite irrevrently. Never have so many hymns been made into beer-drinking songs.) and then open a present (I opened a new Bop-It!) and all the kids go down to the basement for the night (we watched reruns of 'The Amanda Show'- classic!)

So, that's been my Christmas Eve! Merry Christmas tomorrow!

Advent, Day 23: A Book I Just Read

My family is one of those were in elementary school we would all read instead of play at recess cuz we love books and we don't have friends. Our big summertime thrill is going to the public library and getting as many books as we want instead of the regular two-book limit. HIGH TIMES.

Yesterday I went with my mom to sneakily return some overdue library books and almost returned this book that wasn't a library book at all, but a school classroom book called 'Princess of the Midnight Ball', by Jessica Day George. It's a retelling of the fairytale 'The Twelve Dancing Princesses', which I, and you, I'm sure, only know from the Barbie version. The book coulda been written better, yeah, but it's, you know, for fifth graders.* The actual story, through all the silly writing, is pretty and touching and is solved by a man knitting things, which I don't know is true or not but is kind of silly and sweet.

So, a good book overall and good for a two-day read. I'm reading 'The Thief Lord' again next, (unless I get something better for Christmas... hehehe), which, yeah, I've read before, but I love Cornelia Funke and also Rissa is reading 'Inkheart' so I can't.

Merry Christmas! Happy vacation reading!

(Sorry Mrs. Rollins' fifth grade class at East Layton Elementary... I'll give it back! Soon probably!)

Advent, Day 22: The Christensen Family Show

Christmas this year is on a Sunday again, which means short church! Yes! Best Christmas present ever!

(Not really. That's terrible. But really. It's Christmas. Sorry.)

I'm sure most Mormon Christmas services are just music, like ours. My mom, unofficial ward pianist extradinaire, is playing in like ever single number. Accompaning, singing, and playing in the Christensen Family Band! Rob's on the bassoon, Nikki on violin, Holly on clarinet, Megan on cello, and me on viola cuz everything else was taken.

We sound re-DIC. It's a stupid combination of instruments. But I love it :) Family band! (Except Rissa and Dad...)

EVERYONE SKIP CHURCH ON SUNDAY AND COME LISTEN TO US PLAY IT SOUNDS AWESOME MERRY CHRISTMAS

Advent, Day 21: The House That Built Me, In A Lot of Words

I've been working on this post for a while, cuz I wasn't sure exactly how to say this and also I always get so distracted when I have deadlines...
Tonight I was reading a post from a friend's blog about her parents' upcoming move (thanks Sam!). She posted a video of Miranda Lambert's song 'The House That Built Me'. It's not a song I particularly love, mostly because for the longest time I thought she was saying 'Bilby', like a dog or something... But anyway it's a good song and I like it well enough.
So the song and the post helped me find some words for this post. I wanted to write about how much I love where I live. I feel like I live in the greatest country on earth. Not many people would contest that; we have the most freedoms, the most stability, the most wealth, a great education system, equality, health care, all that and more. On top of that, I live in the best state in the greatest country; everyone here is friendly, it's wealthy, low crime, mild summers, and 'the best snow on earth'- plus, who doesn't like living in a place where everyone has the same high values? I ask you.
So, in this greatest country in the best state, I live in the best city. Northern Utah is near enough to the wildlands of central and southern Utah (Moab, Canyonlands, all that) for frequent vacays, but is more mild and green. The Wasatch Front is the best of all this- nestled in the great big bowl created by the Great Salt Lake, close enough to see the Lake but far enough from the smell, far enough from the bustle and pollution of SLC but close enough for like concerts and stuff that happens in the city.
See? Perfect. Layton is a great little town, half farming village, half 'biggest city in Davis County', which it is. Then there's the East Bench, where I live in the East Layton neighborhood of Snow Canyon (no one rob me). The air force base is a ten minute drive, so there's a huge population of military families. In school, class was constantly halted by No crime, nice people, a view of the mountains in the back and clear sights all the way over the valley to the Ochre Mountains across Antelope Island the Lake. It's beautiful (plus the pollution from the city makes for great sunsets!). On the Fourth of July we can see the firework shows from twelve different cities! I haven't even talked about the small-town feel of these people. We have Independence Day breakfasts, bicycle parades, Christmas concerts, all sorts of neighborly events. My favorite it the generic 'Neighborhood Party' in the summertime up at the home of the richest family in town. We play games, ride horses, have watermelon-eating contests, watch a football game, and, this year, roast a pit in the sandbox. De-lish.
So, Snow Canyon on the East Bench of East Layton of the Wasatch Front in Northern Utah in America is the best place to live in the world.

That's the Miranda Lambert video. It's a prettier version of everything that I just said.

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 20: It's America! Anyway...

I was watching GAC (that's Great American Country to all you people not raised in Texas) on TV the other day. They only show country music videos, all day long. Also the Miss America pageant.
Anyway, I was watching it, and this Rodney Atkins song came on, for 'It's America'. (Country music always makes me weepy and patriotic, so I was tearing already by this time.) The video's hilarious, cute, American (awesome), and... anyway, I like it. Especially the part when Rodney Atkins goes and and sends the Mexicans out! AMERICA!, as Professor Clybor says...

Sorry for the disorganization of this post... stray thoughts... Merry... Christmas...? Anyway...

Advent, Day 19: A Music Festival

I think these bands would be super awesome together in concert, complenetary sounds and whatever. A super awesome (yes, twice) music festival line-up:

Sufjan Stevens and Freelance Whales
The Civil Wars, Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers
Adele and Kate Nash
James Taylor and The Dixie Chicks
Weezer and Rooney
Noah and the Whale and Yellowcard

My sister, Megan, had some suggestions:
Foster the People and Band of Horses
The Naked and Famous and The Barenaked Ladies... pretty much for the names, I think. So much nakedness!!

(That's the Avett Brothers. Are they actually brothers? I don't know.)

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 18: Christmas Mini Cupcake-Muffins

My little sister Rissa got this mini cupcake maker for Christmas from her cousin yesterday. This morning I helped her make chocolate chip muffins (from a box) in her new mini cupcake maker. Though they taste like metal and take five minutes a muffin, an Easy Bake this is not!

It's freakin' awesome! Her cupcake-muffins came out all adorable and mini, and my oven muffins came out all mammoth and admittedly very, very burnt. Go figure.

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 17: A Christmas Complaint

My sister took over my room when I went to college so now I have to sleep on the couch. My brother took the downstairs couch so now I get the 'lights-on-at-6:30-piano-lessons-breakfast-talking-loud' upstairs couch.

Happy to be home? Of course. But I'm asking Santa for a bed this year.

(This is an actual painting of our Christmas mornings. Isn't that sweet!)

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 16: WonderMom

If I've learned one thing since I've been home for Christmas is that being a stay at home mom is hardly the walk in the park that I thought. It's EXHAUSTING. I've run countless errands, volunteered at the school and at church, spent hours shopping for gifts and groceries, cooking, baking, cleaning... and I don't even have to deal with the six kids or subbing jobs.

Sheesh. My mom = Wonder Woman.

Merry Christmas! Love you, Mom!

Advent, Day 15: Home For Christmas!

Truly, there is 'no place like home for the holidays'. So that's where I am right now. At home.

For Christmas.

And it's wonderful.

That's my house. Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 13: A Playlist for Lovers, or When Hyphens Attack

I've never been in love or anything like it, but I imagine that it's a little bit more Lizzie-and-Gordo, Jim-and-Pam than Rose-and-Jack or Ewan-McGregor-and-Nicole-Kidman, whatever they're names were...
Anyway, that's why I like these love songs. They all celebrate that normal, kissing-under-Fourth-of-July-fireworks love instead of fireworks-because-we're-kissing kind of love.

'Mine', Taylor Swift
'Long, Sweet, Summer Nights', Thorns
'Light Up My Room', The Barenaked Ladies
'Walk Me Down The Middle', The Band Perry
'Crazy Girl', The Eli Young Band
'Swingset Chain', Loquat
'Your Smiling Face', James Taylor
'All Your Life', The Band Perry
'Our Song', Taylor Swift
'I Hate Seagulls', Kate Nash
'Something Like That', Tim McGraw
'Somewhere Only We Know', Keane
'You're So Nice', Kimya Dawson
'Honeybee', Blake Shelton
'The Middle', Diamond Rio
'Birds', Kate Nash
'Mary's Song (Oh My, My, My)', Taylor Swift

Those who've been in love can correct my assumptions, and those in love with grammar can correct my over-usage of hyphens in this post.

In either case, merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 14: How The Power Rangers Prevented My Enlightenment

Today I was thinking about eternity and infinity and how insignificant everything I spend my days doing is.

Then I went to write in my journal about it.

But then 'Avatar The Last Airbender' was on so I didn't. Then 'Power Rangers' was on and it was 'Jungle Fury' so I had to watch it.

All I've done today was eat two grapefruits.

(BTW, my Google search for 'infinity' just turned up pictures of cars.
America.)

Merry Christmas?

Advent, Day 12: Hallelujah!

This morning I got up at 5:00 AM and studied because I didn't the day before. I walked through the undoubtedly rapist-infested dark streets to school at 6:30 for a test at 7:30. I sat my German final (Ich habe die Prufrung schon geshreiben! Or something). When I was done I studied for my next final updated my blog, then wrote my Modern European History final, which filled up two examination booklets (do teachers love that? I think they do. I think they'd like to know everything that I know.) After that was done I did my final for The History of Interior Furnishings and Architecture, with the help of my trusty friend, Wikipedia. (Don't judge. It's usually right!)

All that means, I AM DONE WITH SCHOOL TILL JANUARY 9th! OH MY GOODNESS AM I EXCITED.

(That isn't really what college looks like. There are more girls there.
And the reindeer are more ironic.)

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 11: The Second Greatest American Holiday

Which would be, The Day The Second Season of 'The Vampire Diaries' Came In the Mail.

That would be today.

I hate finals just because they are making me not watch the second season of 'The Vampire Diaries' all the time.

Finals, be over.

Isn't that just such a confusingly sexy picture? I think so.

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 10: Chocolat

Have you ever seen that movie 'Chocolat'? It terrific. It's pretty, kinda mystical, and about chocolate! Yum! To sum up, it is about a woman and her daughter who open a chocolate shop in a small French village and shakes up pretty much everyone's lives. (Also it has Johnny Depp in it but I don't know how I feel about that.)

This morning I woke up early (for a Saturday) (meaning like 10:30) and, instead of eating breakfast, or studying for the big week of tests coming up, I made chocolates.

(I ruined them. I overheated the chocolate and it got all chunky and not sexy at all.)

(They still taste good though, cuz it's still chocolate, you know).

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 9: The Last Day of Class in 2011

I just turned in a ten-page final for a history class. I rambled about the Crusades and the Middle Ages and blah blah until I came in my essay to the Renaissance. We hadn't learned about the Renaissance yet. I don't know anything about the Renaissance.

Today's lecture was on the Renaissance. Everything I put in my essay was, well, wrong.

I'm growling in rage right now.

Merry *$%(# Christmas.

(Just kidding. I won't take out my fury on Christmas!)

IN GOOD NEWS there are only 55 more minutes until classes are over for ALL OF 2011. Which is pretty cool. Just three more tests next week, then I am home free! Till January!

Merry Christmas! For realzies!

Advent, Day 8: A Playlist For Cowboys

This is my favorite playlist. I listen to all the time- studying, cooking, cleaning, whatever, and it always distracts me. It's called 'Cowboy' on my iPod, cuz its kind of all about cowboys. And it is awesome.

'Wide Open Spaces', The Dixie Chicks
'The Cowboy in Me', Tim McGraw
'Barton Hollow', The Civil Wars
'Sweet Baby James', James Taylor
'Battle Hymn of the Republic', SheDaisy
'Cowboy Singer', Lucy Kaplansky
'Danny's Song', Loggins & Messina
'For You', Barenaked Ladies
'Cowboy, Take Me Away', The Dixie Chicks
'Down To The River To Pray', 'Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?'
'Full Moon', The Black Ghost
'If I Die Young', The Band Perry
'Living of Love', The Avett Brothers
'Have You Seen My Love?', The Barenaked Ladies
'Long Ride Home', Patty Griffin
'A Love Song', Loggins & Messina
'Riding on a Railroad', James Taylor
'The Wanderlust' (acoustic), Flogging Molly
'Wildwood Flower', 'Walk The Line'
'Gold', Interference

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 7: Pearl Harbor

Today is the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Seventy years, today, in fact. In my dorm room I have giant framed Salt Lake Tribune from August 15, 1945, the day Japan surrendered and World War II Ends!, as the headline says. It's a pretty cool thing for a history major to have in her apartment, I have to say. I found it in my Grandma's basement a couple of years ago.

You know, our generation is one of the first in a hundred years that hasn't participated in global conflict. There was The Great War, then World War II thirty years later, then Americans were all affected by Vietnam. We had our first taste of war on September 11th, but I think we've already forgotten. I hope today that everyone takes just a second to appreciate what we've got going here. We've got unequaled freedoms, and most of us haven't done anything to deserve them.

God bless America!

(P.S. It's also my uncle's birthday, Happy Birthday Uncle Kelly!)

Advent, Day 6: Free Food

I really think the only reason any college kid goes to church or a blood drive is for the free food.

I'm serious.

Free food is a big deal to a college kid. It's the one unifying thing that binds us all together as students, as citizens, and as human beings.

Today the Cafe Rio in Logan was giving free food- whatever you want, free. And Cafe Rio is everybody's favorite.

FREE CAFE RIO FOR CHRISTMAS!

That's what I had for lunch today. De-lish!

Advent, Day 5: A Memory

My first date was with a boy named Steven. I asked him to a girls-choice dance in a group with two other girls who had also never been on a date.

For our date, we went out for ice cream.

He was lactose intolerant.

We never went out again.

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 3: Missi Pyle

Today I dedicate this advent to the Greatest Actress of Our Generation, In My Opinion.

Meet Missi Pyle.

She's the greatest. She's in every great movie ever made, and she is always evil. See Missi here in 'Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker':

Terrifying, right?

See Missi here as the evil stepmom on the latest (and best) 'A Cinderella Story: Once Upon A Song':
(Yes, this is in the midst of the 'Most Amazing and Random Bollywood Dance Number
In The Middle of An ABC Family Straight-to-DVD Movie'. It got a Tony or something.)

You can also see Missi in 'Galaxy Quest' as the alien that isn't Rainn Wilson and Violet's sweatsuit-mom on 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' and on 'Pushing Dasies' one time.

She's so talented.

Merry Christmas!

Advent, Day 1: The Greater American Holiday

The first day of my Christmas advent! (Pretend with me here that this is yesterday and that it won't be today until my next post is written and posted and you read it.)

So, last week was Thanksgiving. And with Thanksgiving comes perhaps the even greater American holiday of Black Friday! My roommate brought home the ENTIRE FIRST SEASON of 'The Vampire Diaries'.

We watched it all in two days. That's like 200 hours of TV.

And it was awesome.

Merry Christmas!

My Fancy New Blog And A Christmas Advent

It is Christmastime!

Almost, anyway.

My family has a tradition of christmas advents, to distract us from the anticipation, I think. My lurvly cousin has started a childhood memory advent on her blog. (I wish I'd spent more time on the Internets yesterday, cuz who starts an advent on the 2nd of December? I ask you.)

So I figure, a day late, I'll start my own Christmas Advent December Countdown. What better to kickoff my Fancy New Blog? The theme for it is a little bit non-themish. It's generally just going to be a string of things; cool things, interesting things, amusing things. That sort.

So, coming soon: my first two days of Christmastime advent. Of Stuff.

Advent, Day 4: Unnecessarily Creepy Songs

These songs are just creepy.

"Somewhere Only We Know", Keane
"So, if you have a minute, why don't we go/ talk about it somewhere only we know/ this could be the end of everything/ so why don't we go/ I knew the path like the back of my hand; so why don't we go?"

"Every Step You Take"
"Every step you take/ I'll be watching you..."

"Candle on the Water", 'Pete's Dragon'
"I'll be your candle on the water/ I'll never let you go/ I'll never let yooouu gooo..."

Merry Christmas?
